Aulonocara Rubin Red (Rubin Red Peacock Cichlid, Ruby Red Cichlid)
Known as Aulonocara this vibrant fish comes from Lake Malawi in East Africa. They are moderately hardy and a favourite amongst the peacock cichlids with its outstanding colours. It has bright oranges and reds strongly contrasted with bright blue markings on the face, tail, and fins. All of the Aulonocara species are all maternal mouth brooders. Particularly in the aquarium hobby, Aulonocara species are also known as peacock cichlids.
As aquarium fish, they are best kept with other medium sized non-aggressive cichlids from Lake Malawi.
Decorate the aquarium with a lot of open space for the Aulonocaras to swim in and a lot of caves where fish can hide, rest or establish territories. Only keep one male unless your aquarium is large enough to support several territories.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Only keep one male unless your aquarium is large enough to support several territories.
They will quickly adapt to the aquarium, thus making a desirable pet. Provide an open space for swimming and a lot of caves for hiding, sleeping, or breeding.
Water changes that are frequent also help in keeping this cichlid. They will eat a meaty diet and have an almost puppy like excitability when being fed, thus adding to their appeal. Although they may feed on zooplankton, which can contain some vegetable matter, their diet is primarily carnivorous. Avoid tubifex worms, and do not offer mammal meat.
These fish may prefer to swim near the bottom of the aquarium.
