Melanochromis dialeptos (Melanochromis "Dwarf Auratus")

This is an interesting and rather uncommonly traded member of its genus. Females are marked with orange, light brown, and dark brown stripes along their flanks and a blue-black edge to the dorsal fin. The pelvic, anal, and lower half of the dorsal fins are yellow. The tail fin is marked with numerous dark brown to black stripes running more or less the full length of the fin. Males are, if anything, less brightly coloured, with silvery-blue bodies and dark blue pelvic and anal fins. Dominant males are darker blue than young or subdominant males. Males also have yellow egg spots on the anal fin.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Like other Melanochromis this is a very aggressive fish best kept on its own in a harem-type setup with one male and several females. Males are likely to view any other cichlid with similar colouration as a potential rival, and not just their own species. Primarily a planktivore, it appreciates a variety of different prepapred and frozen foods. Breeding similar to Melanochromis auratus. Because of its small size, it should not be mixed with substantially larger and more aggressive tankmates.

Family Group: African Cichlids
Distribution Lake Malawi, Africa: Masinje Rocks
Temperature 24-26C
Size Around 7-8 cm
Water Parameters Hard, alkaline water essential
