Large, schooling fish from fast flowing waters. These fish are cyprinids closely related to the barbs, but superficially resemble trout.
This species is silvery with golden flanks and a series of 9-11 black bars on the flanks. The dorsal fin is bright orange.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Because these fish are big, active, and predatory, they need to be kept in a suitably large aquarium. They like live foods such as earthworms but will also take frozen bloodworms, pellets, and large flakes.
Not commonly bred. These fish need to be conditioned at a low temperaure (around 15C) and then gradually warmed to around 24C. Eggs are scattered among plants and unguarded. The fry can be raised on small live foods.
