Small, compact cichlids from the soft and acidic waters of the Rio Negro.
Female is pinkish brown with markings limited to a vertical black patch running through the eye. In breeding conditions, males have bluish fins and a series of irregular vertical black blotches on the flanks with a horizontal black line passing through them. Flanks further decorated with numerous metallic patches. Outside of breeding condition males are less brightly coloured and essentially similar to the females, but the horizontal dark band remains obvious.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
As with other species in te genus, this is a shy, somewhat delicate fish that should be kept alone or with very peaceful tankmates such as neon tetras. Small live foods such as bloodworms and daphnia preferred, but can be weaned onto frozen foods.
Breeding is assumed to be similar to Nannacara anomala.
