Mature dominant males are light blue with dark blue vertical bands. The fins are blue and edged with blue-black and turquoise banding. Prominent egg spots are usually present on the anal fin. Females and immature males have a golden-brown body overlaid with bright yellow spots. The fins are yellow, and inconspicuous egg spots may or may not be present on the anal fin.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
An aggressive, intolerant species that should only be kept with other fish with a similar disposition. Unlike most other members of its genus this fish is a loner, and males do not form harems.
An omnivore, this fish needs a mix of algae and small invertebrates such as bloodworms. Generally easy to feed, and does well in community tanks.
Breeding as for other members of the genus. It is a polygamous mouthbrooder. The female broods the clutch of eggs alone, and the male plays no role in broodcare. The fry, once they emerge, are quite large and easy to rear.
