Hyphessobrycon loweae (Kitty Tetra, Lowe's Tetra)

![]() |
This pretty little tetra isn't very eye-catching when young, but as it matures they colour up nicely. Both sexes are yellowy, but males are bigger, have longer fins, and more red on the fins. Strongest colours only develop with age and when the males and females are kept in equal numbers.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Quite a peaceful species, though like many other Hyphessobrycon could become nippy when combined with slow-moving or long-finned fish such as bettas and fancy guppies.
Maintenance as other Hyphessobrycon. Needs good, clean water, ideally on the soft side, and must be kept in a reasonably large group. Will eat most foods including flake, but small insects and crustaceans are particularly relished.
