Serrasalmus serrulatus (Serrated Piranha)

A relatively small piranha species with a silvery grey body that is marked with indistinct vertical bars and a large dark band immediately behind the pectoral fin (the so-called humeral spot). The tail fin is black while the other fins are clear.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

An aggressive loner that is best kept in its own system. Although it is small enough to be considered for robust community tanks alongside armoured catfish, in practise there is little point to doing this. Like most piranhas these fish are skittish and simply do better in a quiet, well planted tank with lots of shade.

Quite an omnivorous species, wild fish consuming appreciable quantities of plant material, particularly fruit, along with the usual small fish and aquatic invertebrates. May peck at soft plants if it is feeling hungry.
