This lovely little species comes from the middle region of the Congo River Basinand and will grow to a maximum length of about 6cm. It is one of the smallest species (and prettiest) of Distichodus there is due to it being a dwarf species of Distichodus.
Distichodus teugelsi is a 'new species' and is distinguished from all other Distichodus species by a couple features; the presence of two rows of bicuspid teeth on upper jaw and a single one on the lower jaw and a unique colour pattern characterised by a light greenish band dividing the flanks into a darker greenish upper and lower part.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
This species inhabit a soft and acidic water in the middle course of the Congo river. The males are generally found to be smaller than the females, with females presenting with a significantly bigger belly.
Distichodus are known to dispute with members of their own family but these small squabbles usually do not lead to serious consequences.
All species of Distichodus need plant matter as food, so if the aquarist offers it, Distichodus teugelsi will happily feed on a complete underwater garden. They also feed on worms, crustaceans and insects.
