Melanotaenia sp. Sungguer (Sungguer Rainbowfish)
Melanotaenia is a genus of Rainbowfish from Australia, Indonesia (West Papua), New Guinea, and nearby smaller islands. The largest rainbowfish genus, Melanotaenia, derives from the ancient Greek melano (black) and taenia (banded). Translated, it means "black-banded", and is a reference to the often striking lateral black bands that run along the bodies of those in the genus Melanotaenia.
Rainbowfish are usually less than 12 cm in length, with some species measuring less than 6cm, while one species, Melanotaenia vanheurni, reaches lengths of up to 20cm.
Rainbowfish are popular aquarium fish along with Pseudomugil blue-eyes, which are another small, colourful fish found in a similar range and habitats.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Rainbowfish like these live in a wide range of freshwater habitats, including rivers, lakes, and swamps. Although they spawn all year round, they lay a particularly large number of eggs at the start of the local rainy season. The eggs are attached to aquatic vegetation, and hatch seven to 18 days later. Rainbowfish are omnivorous, feeding on small crustaceans, insect larvae, and algae.
If putting your Rainbow fish in a community tank, provide ample hiding spots for these fish. With out the comfort of being able to find shelter it is unlikely to get the most of their coloration. In nature you will find them in schools under floating logs and plants when not swimming as a group, they need the same environment in the aquarium.
Rainbow fish are generally mid level swimmers and are most effectively displayed in tanks which simulate their natural habitat. As with most of the rainbowfish species the these Rainbowfish are most at home in well planted aquariums.
When you choose plants make sure to pick plant that can tolerate the hard, alkaline conditions preferred by this fish. They also need stretches of open swimming areas. A sandy substrate, dense vegetation, and bog wood all echo the native rivers of Australian Rainbowfish.
