Microctenopoma ansorgii (Ornate Ctenopoma)

A spectacular dwarf climbing perch suited to a community with other very quiet fish.

Males are slightly larger and have much stronger colours. Like Badis badis they are well-known of their ability to change colour quickly, but in breeding condition or when displaying to other males, the male has vivid red and blue-black vertical bands all along the body. At other times the body may be reddish, green, or grey, but the vertical bands will still be apparent, if not quite so vivid.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Essentially peaceful provided the males are not overcrowded. As with other African climbing perch, this fish is predatory, and will eat smaller fish, particularly livebearer fry.

Will only breed in soft, acidic water preferably filtered through peat. Breeds in a similar way to the common paradise fish, but the fry are very small and need tiny live foods. Not commonly bred, and considered a challenging species.
