Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi (Black Neon Tetra)

A peaceful and attractive fish that is readily available and easy to breed. They are distinctive because of a thin silvery green line that runs from the eye to the tail. Below this line is a broad black line which runs along the length of the body. Always keep these fish in a group and ideally six fish or more. A dark tank bottom and subdued lighting are the best conditions to keep these fish in as it tends to bring out their colouration.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Peaceful, but should be kept in a group because they are schooling fish

Sexing the fish is not too difficult. The females are larger than the males and more deep bodied especially when they are in breeding condition. Condition the fish on a good varied diet and within a few weeks they will be ready to breed. Keep an eye on water quality and ensure that you maintain relatively soft and acidic conditions. They will spawn in dense plants where the eggs will be scattered. Remove the parents after spawning to prevent the eggs from being eaten. The eggs should hatch within 48 hours with the fry free swimming in around four days when they can be fed on infusoria and other suitable fry foods.
