Hyphessobrycon sweglesi (Red Phantom Tetra, Megalamphodus sweglesi)
A popular species popular for its attractive colours and lively character. These fish are happiest in groups, but will spend a great deal of time in pairs displaying to one another. Mature fish have an intense semi-transparent red colouration with a large black blotch well behind the gill covers. Males and females are similar, but males have larger dorsal fins and lack a black patch on the end of the dorsal fin that the females possess.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
lA peaceful, schooling fish that prefers midwater levels of the aquarium. It is a shy species that will only do well in a tank with plenty of cover (e.g., live or plastic plants) and peaceful tankmates of similar size and temperament.
This fish breeds in a similar way to other small tetras. Soft, acid water is essential. Eggs are scattered on the bottom of the tank and are prone to bacterial and fungal decay. After a few days the fry are free swimming and will accept small live foods such as brine shrimp nauplii.
Further fish details are shown below:
|Water Parameters||Soft, acid water preferred, but adaptable|
