Cleithracara maroni (Keyhole Cichlid)

A fish that has no bright colours, but is still one of the more popular cichlids because of their peaceful nature and in fact they tend to be quite shy.

They have a dark bar which runs across the face and an almost black spot which appears high on the flank about two thirds of the distance between the head and the tail. The common name of Keyhole cichlid is because they can develop according to their mood a vertical bar below the spot which then resembles a keyhole.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

It can be difficult to determine the difference between a male and female. In general it is a good idea to buy a group of young fish and wait until they have matured. The females will be more plump when they are full of roe. Most male cichlids will develop elongated dorsal fins, but with these fish both male and female will develop this feature so it cannot be relied upon.

They can be a little difficult to breed, but the best method is to provide them with a flower pot or cave in which they will spawn. If you are successful remove the parents and the eggs should hatch in around four days and the fry will be free swimming in around three days when they can be fed on the usual fry foods.
