Anomalochromis thomasi (African Butterfly Cichlid, Dwarf Jewel Fish)

An oval, deeply-bodied cichlid of moderate size and variable colour. Depending on the mood of the fish, there is a prominent band running through the eye plus five more on the flanks and caudal peduncle. The sides of the fish are covered with numerous small silvery-blue spots. Red and blue markings are present on the edges of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. There is also an eye-spot on the gill covers.

Sexual differences are not strong, and for breeding purposes it is best to raise a group of young fish together and let them pair off naturally. Mature mles are usually a bit bigger than females, and at spawning time the abdomen of the female is obviously rounded.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A territorial but relatively peaceful cichlid that prefers to stay close to the substrate and likes a shady aquarium with plenty of hiding places. Provided there is sufficient space, groups of these fish get along well. Companions from other species should be piecked carefully because this species is quite shy and easily bullied. Opt for peaceful gouramis, calm tetras, and inoffensive catfish. This species does little digging and will not harm plants.

A typical substrate spawner, a pair of these cichlids will guard the eggs and fry, and will move the free swimming fry from nest to nest for a period of up to around a month.
