Corydoras panda (Panda Cory)

An ideal beginner's catfish, this species is hardy, inexpensive, and easy to look after. It will accept most foods, including catfish pellets, but live or frozen bloodworms are a particular favourite. Unlike most other catfish, this species is active by day, and can be relied upon to bring interest to the bottom level of an aquarium.

Corydoras are air breathers, and for this reason must have access to the surface, and should not be kept in very deep tanks (more than 60 cm in depth).

Males are distinguished by their taller, more pointed dorsal fin, while females tend to be larger and more rounded.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

All Corydoras make excellent community tank residents. They are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least three specimens; the more that are kept, the less shy they are inclined to be. Because they are very inoffesive animals, do not mix them with aggressive fish.

Corydoras are egg scatterers. When ripe, the females are very rounded. Putting one female with two females often works well. Soft, acidic water is essential. The female cleans a egg-laying spot, and then collects a packet of sperm from one of the males and transfers it to her nest. She then lays her eggs there. This process may be repeated again every few days. The eggs may take up to 5 days to hatch, and once free swimming, the fry can be raised on newly hatched brine shrimp and finely ground flake or liquid fry food.
