Labidochromis chisumulae

A small, compact cichlid with a blue body and darker blue vertical stripes. Males are larger than the females and much stronger vertical bands, particularly around the 'forehead' region and the front half of the dorsal fin. Females and juveniles essentially pale blue with much weaker bands.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

An excellent species for the beginner.

Basic care is very similar to the popular yellow lab, Labidochromis caeruleus. Like that species, Labidochromis chisumulae is relatively peaceful by Malawian cichlid standards and gets along well with the Malawian haplochromines especially, such as Aulonocara, Cyrtocara and Nimbochromis. Likely to be bullied by mbuna, except for relatively non-aggressive species like Pseudotropheus acei and Iodotropheus sprengerae. Naturally, to avoid hybridisation Labidochromis chisumulae shouldn't be kept alongside other Labidochromis species, including Labidochromis caeruleus.

Feeds on a wide range of small invertebrates including insect larvae, but under aquarium conditions happily takes good quality flake, pellets and frozen foods. Some algae-based flake should be offered, but this species is an omnivore rather than a herbivore. Can be bred in the same way as Labidochromis caeruleus, the species being a maternal mouthbrooder that holds a clutch of around 15 eggs for up to 4 weeks. Keep in groups where the females outnumber the males by at least two to one. A harem consisting of one male and three females could easily be houses in 150 litres.
