A small lamprologine cichlid with a mottled grey to pinkish-brown body, yellowish fins and a distinctive blue sheen to the flanks. The dorsal and anal fins are edged with black, and the lips are often metallic blue.
Some authorities place the species in the genus Lepidiolamprologus, pointing to an apparently close relationship with the species Lepidiolamprologus kendalli.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
This small, cave-spawning cichlid is distinctly territorial and predatory, but works well in tanks with lots of rocks. Males are intolerant of one another, but pairs are stable and defend their shared cave effectively. Suitable for use in Tanganyikan community tanks alongside fish of similar temperament.
Feeds on krill, bloodworms and other meaty foods. Enjoys live foods, and is sufficiently predatory that very small fish such as cichlid fry may be at risk of being eaten.
