Homaloptera confuzona (Red Lizard Loach, Gecko Loach)
A small, lizard-like loach with mottled red-brown colouration. There are no obvious differences between the sexes.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Homaloptera inhabit fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams where they feed on algae and small invertebrates, particularly crustaceans and insect larvae.
In the aquarium they are not difficult to maintain provided some attempt is made to give them similar conditions to those they'd experience in the wild. A rapid flow of water is essential, and good mixing of the bottom and top layers of water is important; aim for a turnover rate equivalent to 8 or more times the volume of the tank per hour.
These loaches are gregarious and should be kept in small groups. They are not known to have bred in captivity.
