Trigonostigma heteromorpha (Harlequin, Rasbora heteromorpha)
A popular fish that is widely available in the shops. When these fish are mature they display a strong coppery colouration with a purple-black patch on each flank. They look very impressive when kept as a group in a shady, well-planted community tank. Usually they look quite drab in colour in the fish shop because they are sold when too young to show their full colours. Do not let this put you off, they are a striking fish to keep and are a worthy addition to any community tank.
Tank bred "Black" and "Gold" forms are now available. The Black form has a greatly expanded dark marking on its flanks, whereas the Gold form lacks this patch altogether, and its ground colour is more yellowy-pink than the normal coppery red.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Very peaceful and should be kept in a group of at least six fish.
Breeding can be a little difficult. Keep the fish in a well planted tank with soft and slightly acidic water. Initially keep a group together and look for a suitable pair. You can them remove the other fish and start conditioning the pair on a good and varied diet. If the fish spawn, the female will deposit her eggs on the underside of broad leaved plants and the male will fertilise them at the same time. The eggs hatch after about 24 hours and as soon as the fry are free swimming they can be fed on infusoria and other suitable fry foods.
