Julidochromis ornatus (Golden Julie)
A small, slender cichlid popular with aquarists keeping Tanganyikan cichlids. Julidochromis ornatus are noted for their brilliant yellow and black colouration. Various geographical varieties are known, differing slightly in their colouration.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Julidochromis ornatus is a shy but territorial cichlid that works well in Tanganyikan community tanks. Pairs are intolerant of conspecifics and other Julidochromis, but they largely ignore different types of cichlid. Rarely straying far into the open, this species needs a tank with plenty of rocks and burrows. Likes to dig, but will not uproot sturdy plants such as Vallisneria spp.
Pairs lay their eggs inside a cave, often on the roof, and the parents defend both eggs and fry vigorously. Brood sizes are small, usually just a few dozen. The fry are easy to rear on finely powdered flake, and in a mature aquarium at least a few fry will mature without any assistance from the aquarist.
