Danio frankei (Leopard Danio)

A hardy, active, and attractive little fish, the leopard danio has been a staple of the hobby for many years. As its name suggests, it is patterned with small black spots. It also has quite long barbels. Males are smaller but more strongly coloured. A long-fin artificial variant is also available.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A peaceful, sturdy little fish that does very well in community aquaria. It prefers water a little on the cool side compared with most other tropical fish, but if kept in warmer water will do well provided the oxygenation of the water is good. Though plucky and adaptable, these fish definitely look their best when kept in a large school rather than twos or threes.

Easy to breed; see Danio rerio.
