Trigonostigma espei (Espe's Rasbora, Rasbora espei, Lambchop Rasbora, False Harlequin)

A compact fish with a copper-coloured body marked with a L-shaped blue-black patch on the back half of the body. Frequently confused with the harlequin rasbora Trigonostigma heteromorpha which is very similar in shape and colouration. The two species are often simply sold as "rasboras" by many retailers. The best colours are seen when this fish is kept in a shady planted aquarium where the water has been filtered through peat or had blackwater extract added. Use a dark substrate, such as black sand. In bright tanks, their colours fade and the fishes are unremarkable.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

An excellent community fish that offers a nice combination of colour and activity, the principal difficulty with this fish is its need for soft and acidic water conditions. It simply doesn't prosper in hard, alkaline water often proving to be short lived. Given the right conditions though, these are hardy and easy to keep. They are greedy feeders and make excellent dither fish for bottom dwellers such as Apistogramma and Badis spp.

Has been bred in home aquaria. Water must be very soft and acidic (pH 5.5-6.0). Eggs are scattered among the plants. Eggs hatch after 24 hours and can be reared on infusoria.
