Barilius bakeri (Blue spotted hill trout)

Large, schooling fish from fast flowing waters. These fish are cyprinids closely related to the barbs, but superficially resemble trout.

This species is blue-silver with a series of around 10 or so narrow bands or blotches on the flanks. The males have orange edges to the caudal and anal fins, the females white.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Because these fish are big, active, and predatory, they need to be kept in a suitably large aquarium. They like live foods such as earthworms but will also take frozen bloodworms, pellets, and large flakes.

Not commonly bred. These fish need to be conditioned at a low temperaure (around 15C) and then gradually warmed to around 24C. Eggs are scattered among plants and unguarded. The fry can be raised on small live foods.
