Nannostomus marginatus (Dwarf Pencilfish)
A small fish that will only thrive in optimum water conditions. They are very peaceful and somewhat shy. They should be kept in a group and are ideal for a smaller community tank which only includes fish of a similar size. The dorsal, anal and ventral fins have bright red colouration and these are undoubtedly one of the more colourful of the pencilfish and are certainly worth seeking out.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Provide them with a well planted tank that does not have very bright lighting. A dark substrate helps and ideally they should be kept in soft slightly acidic water conditions. This will help to bring out their distinctive colouration and will provide them with the ideal conditions to breed in. Females are deeper in body and are more rounded than the males. They can be quite difficult to breed given that optimum water conditions are required. If the fish do spawn they will eat their own eggs so it makes sense to include a lot of planted material in the tank where the eggs may be hidden. If spawning does take place remove the parents as soon as possible. The eggs should hatch after around two days and as soon as the fry are free swimming feed them on infusoria followed by the usual fry foods.
