Osphronemus goramy (Giant Gourami, Water Hog)

This is the largest of all the labyrinth fishes and in it's native countries it is sometimes referred to as the Water Hog. It is an active fish with a high metabolism and it eats a lot.

It is also a fish that was quite commonly found in the shops, but now awareness over their eventual full size means that they are not that often seen. This fish may get very big at around 70cm. It is important to only consider buying one if you have the tank space.

A tank size of 6'x2'x2' should be considered a minimum size for these fish and then you can really only accomodate a maximum of two fish at best. You will need very powerful filtration. Also beware that they grow fast so a large tank will be required very quickly.

What makes this fish is interesting is it's temper- they show sings of intellect and even long life experience! Though these gouramis will grow into a very large strong fish, they make a very personable pet. They will come to know you as their friend and it is even reported as being a fish which doesn't mind a gentle stroke by their owners.

The fish lifespan is often longer than 20 years. Although it is not a colourful fish (with both males and females displaying the greyish/brown colouration) they are a glorious fish to watch and keep.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Generally quite a peaceful fish that will tolerate other fish. Juveniles can be aggressive, but this fades as they get older. Ample filtration is a necessity for this fish in order to be able to handle it's bio load.

The Giant Gouramis are omnivores and in their natural South East Asian habitats, they will eat aquatic algae, fish, crustaceans, frogs and worms. In captivity they are certainly not fussy eaters but it is important to keep a good balance of diet. Do this by offering a high quality flake food or pelleted food everyday. Besides regular fish foods they will enjoy eating cooked meat, bread, boiled potatoes and other vegetables. Mammal meat should be rarely offered because they are not able to properly digest these foods. They will enjoy frozen/live brine shrimp or blood worms as a treat, too.

Males are distinguishable from females due to their more pointed anal and dorsal fins. The females also look more fuller bodied at maturity.

Breeding is possible and a pair will build a bubble nest comprising planted matter.
