Anostomus ternetzi (Red Mouth Headstander)
Very similar to the striped headstander Anostomus anostomus, but the red markings on the fins are not so prominent.
On the plus side, this species is not nearly so territorial, and it can usually be kept in small groups provided it is not overcrowded. Bear in mind that this fish is 18 cmj long when mature, so a fairly large aquarium is essential.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
These fish are omnivores, but are less dependant on algae than some other headstanders. Nonetheless, it is wise to offer them a mixed diet of flake foods, bloodworms, Daphnia, green algae, and small catfish pellets. If kept with dedicated algae eaters (such as plecs or flying foxes) be sure and offer vegetarian flake foods as an alternative. May eat soft-leaved plants, so plant with sturdy or fast-growing species such as Amazon swords, Java ferns, etc.
There are no reports of these fish having been bred in aquarium conditions.
