Serrasalmus eigenmanni (Eigenmann's Piranha)
A medium-sized piranha with a dark silver body peppered across the dorsal surface with round dark grey spots. Adults acquire a gold to coppery colour along the ventral surface. The humeral spot just behind the gill covers is relatively small and variable in intensity. The orange patch across the cheeks and gill region is also variable, from expansive on some specimens to barely noticeable on others. The tail fin is black on the leading edge and translucent grey-white on the trailing edge.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
An aggressive piranha best kept alone. Found in a variety of environments but does best in well-filtered aquaria with strong but not turbulent water flow. Sensitive to poor water quality.
Wild fish eat smaller fish and the fins and scales from larger fish. Aquarium specimens feed on chunky seafood and whitebait.
Breeding is rare in home aquaria, but appears to be similar to other members of the genus.
