Serrasalmus manueli (Green Tiger Piranha, Manuel's Piranha)

Said to be the largest of all the predatory piranhas, the maximum recorded size in the wild is 43.5 cm in length and weighing in at 2.5 kg.

A silvery piranha characterised by having pale green tiger stripes on the flanks. These are strongest on the dorsal surface, and fade towards the belly. This banding is most obvious on juveniles and fades as the fish mature. There is a variable amount of red on and around the gill covers. A tall black spot (the humeral spot) is present just behind the gill opening and above the pectoral fin. The front half of the tail fin is black, the trailing edge semi-opaque. Juvenile fish have a very elongate body shape, and while this rounds out a bit as the fish mature, they remain strong swimmers clearly adapted to fast-flowing habitats.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Given its size, this piranha requires a large, well-filtered aquarium. In addition, this fish comes from fast-flowing water that is warm but well oxygenated. In the aquarium it is easy for this fish to be stressed, so a generous tank with plenty of filtration as well as supplementary circulation using airstones or powerheads is recommended.

Extremely sensitive to dissolved metabolites. It is essential that this fish is kept in a tank with a mature filter, and that water changes are substantial and regular.

Under aquarium conditions this fish is intolerant of its own kind as well as other tankmates, and must be kept alone. Feeding presents no problems as this is one of the more omnivorous piranhas, feeding happily on seafood, whitebait, lancefish, and other meaty foods. Does not need live food, and live fish should definitely be avoided because of the risk of introducing parasites and bacteria.

A delicate but beautiful species.
