Puntius conchonius (Rosy Barb)

A very popular and colourful fish which is widely available. Selective breeding has resulted in long finned varieties being made available.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A shoaling fish and consequently should be kept in a group. Boisterous, very active fish well suited to subtropical aquaria. Can be a fin-nipper, so shouldn't be mixed with fancy goldfish.

Sexing is relatively easy, the males have a rosy red body below the lateral line above which they have a silvery green colouration. The females are dull in colouration with silvery greenish/yellow bodies.

They are egg scatterers and will spawn amongst plants. These fish will readily eat their own eggs. As soon as breeding has taken place the eggs or fish should be removed from the tank. The eggs will hatch in around one day and the fry will be free swimming in around three days. Once the fry are free swimming feed them on newly hatched brine shrimp and other suitable fry foods.
