Macrognathus circumcinctus (Half-banded Spiny Eel, Zigzag Spiny Eel)
A relatively small spiny eel with light brown ground colour and thick, oblique, dark brown wedge-shaped bands on the head and body. As with other spiny eels, sexually differences are not obvious in juveniles, but with adult fish, females tend to be larger and more deeply bodied.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Territorial, predatory, but otherwise safe with mid and upper level fishes too large to be eaten.
As with spiny eels generally, this species likes to dig, and needs a substrate of soft sand. It is a notorious escape artist! Keep the tank securely covered and block any holes large enough for it to escape from. It prefers to feed at night but cannot compete with loaches and catfish so is best kept apart from them. Enjoys live foods such as earthworms, tubifex, and bloodworms. Frozen substitutes will be accepted once settled. Does not eat flake or pellets.
Has not been bred in aquaria.
