Etroplus canarensis (Canara pearlspot)
Distinguished from the other species in the genus by its light brown colour and dark brown stripes, including one through the eye. Although these colours do not sound exciting, the contrast is stunningn when the fish is seen 'in the flesh', and the pearly sheen these fish makes them exceedingly attractive animals. Rarely imported and invariably expensive, this is a highly desireable fish for the cichlid fanatic. Note that this fish does not need brackish water.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Peaceful, schooling fish. Do not keep singly or with aggressive tankmates. Feeds on small invertebrates, algae, and after acclimation, flakes. May eat soft-leaved plants. Only rarely imported and so far breeding in home aquaria has not been observed. Known to be an egglayer with both fish taking care of the eggs and fry.
