Rhinogobius duospilus (White Cheeked Goby)
The current scientific name for this species is Rhinogobius duospilus, but it continues to be referred to as Rhinogobius wui or Ctenogobius duospilus in some books.
A fun, friendly fish that may not be brightly coloured but is constantly active and very entertaining. Males usually have broader heads than the females and have white patches on the dorsal fins. Dominant males will also develop red specks on the gill covers and throat as well. Both sexes are capable of changing their colours depending on their mood, but they are usually a mottled brown.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Lively, territorial fish that constantly fight over perches and caves and will dig burrows in soft sand if they can. Because they are so small they should be kept away from species that might eat them, but these are otherwise easy fish to keep.
May be kept in either fresh or slightly brackish water. Not difficult to keep, but note that this is a fish that needs subtropical conditions. It is short lived if kept in a tropical aquarium. In a cooler tank it will do well alongside fish such as ruby barbs, white cloud mountain minnows, and variatus platies.
Prefers small live foods but will eat fresh or wet-frozen meaty foods including chopped seafood. Otherwise does well on bloodworms, glassworms, brine shrimp and daphnia.
Will jump out of open-topped aquaria.
