Opsarius pulchellus (Stream Barilius)

A very attractive and active species from the fast flowing streams of Southeast Asia. The body is long, streamlined and has a warm metallic colour that appears pearly or coppery depending on the light. There are several green-blue vertical bands on the flanks. The dorsal fin is sail-like and marked with black stripes.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Basic care similar to giant danios or Barilius. Needs a roomy aquarium with plenty of swimming space. Strong water current is essential, and there must also be plenty of oxygen. Avoid keeping these fish too warm. Ideally, combine with tankmates from similar habitats, such as giant danios, Barilius, Scleromystax barbatus, loaches and fast-water loricariid catfish.

Feeds on insects that have fallen on the surface of the water as well as small aquatic invertebrates. Readily eats bloodworms, mosquito larvae, fruit flies, small crickets and other such prey. Will also eat flake and pellets. Not a piscivore, but will certainly eat very small fish, so choose tankmates with care.
