Panaque maccus (L 104, Clown Plec)

A small, wood brown catfish with light brown vertical bands. The name Panaqolus maccus is sometimes seen in the aquarium literature but has no scientific validity; despite their small size, these species are considered members of the genus Panaque just like their larger cousins such as Panaque nigrolineatus.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

This small catfish is territorial but peaceful. It can be kept in groups but each specimen will require an area around 30 x 30 cm within which it will claim a suitable burrow or cave as its personal refuge.

Panaque are nocturnal omnivores. Much of their diet is plant material, and decaying may be a key element, so bogwood should always be provided. Otherwise they enjoy algae wafers, bloodworms, catfish pellets and so on.
