Herichthys pearsei (Pantano Cichlid, Cichlasoma pearsei)
A large, round-bodied cichlid with a greenish-gold body marked with an expansive black area on the lower half of the flanks and the ventral area. There is a small black eyespot at the base of the tail. Vertical dark bands may also be visible, depending on the mood of the fish. Males are larger than the females and have a pronounced nuchal hump but otherwise the two sexes are similar.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Wild fish are found in rivers, primarily in the lower parts including the estuaries. They are also found in lakes. Diet consists almost entirely of plant material, including both aquatic plants and algae as well as terrestrial plant fragments. In the aquarium their diet should reflect this, and be based on plant and algae foods of various types.
Otherwise basic care is similar to other members of the genus Herichthys such as the Texas cichlid. Aggressive and territorial, and not suitable for the community tank. Requires quite warm water. Breeding not commonly reported, hut likely to be similar to other Herichthys. Sensitive to poor water quality, especially high levels of nitrate.
