Dimidiochromis compressiceps (Malawi Eye Biter, Cyrtocara compressiceps)
A variable species, most commonly seen in its blue form but a golden form is also seen periodically. The fins are reddish, and on males yellow egg spots are obvious. Male fish also have bright colour fringes on the edge of the dorsal fin, typically red and powder blue. Females and immature males have a dark band running along the midline of the flank.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Apart from being predatory and easily able to fish up to half its size, this species is completely peaceful and relatively easy to keep. Live foods are preferred, but it can be weaned onto flake and pellets. Earthworms, river shrimps, and so on make good conditioning foods. Fairly readily spawned in captivity. A maternal mouthbrooder, the eggs are fertilised externally on a stone. Incubation time is about three weeks. Females will eat free swimming fry, so should be removed once the fry have been released.
