Hyphessobrycon bentosi (Bentos Tetra)
Similar to the more widely seen bleeding heart tetra, but not so large, and lacking the red spot on the flanks. The body has a pinkish colour. Males are more strongly coloured and have an extended dorsal fin. An attractive, undemanding species.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful, schooling fish that prefers midwater levels of the aquarium. It is a shy species that will only do well in a tank with plenty of cover (e.g., live or plastic plants) and peaceful tankmates of similar size and temperament.
This fish breeds in a similar way to other small tetras. Soft, acid water is essential. Eggs are scattered on the bottom of the tank and are prone to bacterial and fungal decay. After a day or so the fry are free swimming and will accept tiny live foods such as microworms.
Further fish details are shown below:
|Distribution||Guiana (South America)|
|Water Parameters||Soft, acid water preferred, but adaptable|
