Dianema longibarbis (Porthole Catfish)
Dianema spp. resemble Hoplosternum in basic shape, but are much more delicate and streamlined in build. They are quite good swimmers and spend a lot of the time in mid water. Dianema longibarbis is one of the more robust and adaptable species, but even so, it should only be used in a mature, well maintained aquarium alongside peaceful tankmates.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful, schooling catfish ideally suited to soft water communities containing tetras, rasboras, etc. Lively and potentially active by day as well as night, but easily bullied, so should not be combined with nippy or aggressive tankmates or it will become shy and more nocturnal. Appreciates open swimming spaces but demands plenty of shade, so ideally suited to an aquarium with lots of tall or floating plants. Bogwood and rocks will also be used as hiding places. Omnivorous, but favours catfish pellets and small invertebrates such as bloodworms.
Rarely bred in captivity.
