Hyphessobrycon pyrrhonotus (Flame-backed Bleeding Heart Tetra)
Similar to the popular bleeding heart tetra but distinguished by a prominent red patch along the back of the fish from the base of the dorsal to the tail fin. Dorsal fins become greatly elongated on mature males, trailing backwards almost to the tail.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful, schooling fish that prefers midwater levels of the aquarium. It is a shy species that will only do well in a tank with plenty of cover (e.g., live or plastic plants) and peaceful tankmates of similar size and temperament.
This fish breeds in a similar way to other small tetras. Soft, acid water is essential. Eggs are scattered on the bottom of the tank and are prone to bacterial and fungal decay. After a few days the fry are free swimming and will accept small live foods such as brine shrimp nauplii.
Further fish details are shown below:
|Water Parameters||Soft, acid water preferred, but adaptable|
