L002 (Panaque sp., Tiger Peckoltia)

A small, inoffensive, rather shy algae and wood eating catfish. Attractively marked with alternating light and dark brown stripes, hence the common name of "tiger peckoltia", Peckoltia being a genus of small catfish to which this species was once attached. As with all Panaque, this catfish can be delicate immediately after import and needs to be provided with good water conditions and plenty of green and woody foods. Courgette and other fresh vegetables are appreciated, and bogwood must be included in the tank as these fish naturally eat and digest wood. Sometimes referred to the genus Panaqolus by hobbyists, this particular Latin name is not used by scientists.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

As with Panaque generally, this fish is shy and very nocturnal by nature, although once settled in it may become more outgoing. Feeds primarily on wood and thinly sliced vegetables such as courgette and sweet potato. Supplement the diet with algae wafers, and, less frequently, with small quantities of bloodworms and other meaty foods. Bogwood is an essential part of the diet of this fish. It is territorial towards its own kind and potentially other plecs, but community fish such as barbs and tetras are completely ignored. Not yet bred in home aquaria.
