Hemiodus thayeria

Hemiodus thayeria are a very peaceful and amazingly calm species within their genus, and are known to be somewhat shy and sometimes even tend to panic reactions.

The large eye and the reddish zone over the nose-back are captivating and pleasing to the eye. Obviously, both characteristics serve the species-recognition.

This beautiful, elegant fish comes from the border area of Brazil and Colombia at the Rio Negro. The Hemiodontidae are a small family of freshwater characins and the larger species are popular food fish.

Hemiodontids have a streamlined body shape; many are fast-swimming, and are able to leap out of the water to escape predators. The adults of almost all species have no teeth on their lower jaws, hence why they are referred to as 'halftooths'.

Most species have a round spot on the side of the midbody and a stripe along the lower lobe of the caudal fin. This species will grow to around 10CM in length.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

Most species have a round spot on the side of the midbody and a stripe along the lower lobe of the caudal fin. This species will grow to around 10CM in length and is a peaceful species.

An idea for set up of a tank housing these beautiful fish would be a layer of a couple of inches of inert sand as substrate, with perhaps some driftwood branches and twisted roots scattered around.

It’s also equally at home in a fully planted setup. In either case, the water should be very well-oxygenated and make sure the tank has a well-fitting cover as it can leap surprising distances. The species is sensitive to poor water conditions.

This species will accept most live, frozen and dried foods but it is worth noting that vegetation is important as it is reported to feed quite heavily on plant matter in nature.
