Apistogramma agassizii "Super Red" (Agassiz' Dwarf Cichlid)
A variable species, typically with a yellow body marked with blue or green metallic speckles and a dark band running horizontally from behind the eye to the base of the tail. The dorsal and tail fins are red or orange. The sexes are similar, but the female is a bit smaller, and has a round tail fin instead of one that tapers somewhat.
This is an artificial form of this popular species, with enhanced red colouration in the fins.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A generally peaceful cichlid, but can be territorial towards members of their own species especially when spawning.
The key to breeding success is optimum water conditions. The females are a lot smaller than the males which have elongated dorsal and anal fins. Provide them with plenty of hiding places such as caves or a flowerpot. Once you have an established pair condition them on a good varied diet such as frozen bloodworm and brineshrimp. They are cave spawners and if they do spawn the female will drive the male away and protect the eggs. The eggs will hatch in around three to five days and the fry should be free swimming around five days later.
