Clarotes laticeps (Widehead Catfish)
This wonderful catfish is one of the large river catfishes of Africa. It inhabits large lakes and rivers throughout many parts of Africa including counties such as Egypt, Nigeria, Tanzania and Kenya. Physically, the Widehead Cafish it's an olive brown and has a depressed head, a broad snout, an inferior mouth, a strong dorsal fin spine and four pairs of barbels.
This is not a particularly common species in the trade and also is not a catfish for the average hobbyists aquarium. This species is best suited to an experienced catfish aquarist who has years of knowledge on keeping fish of this size, it is a good and interesting addition.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
This is a large and predatory species and although it is generally peaceful in home aquaria, tankmates must be chosen carefully because this species is capable of swallowing surprisingly large prey items. It is best to aim for keeping tankmates which are larger than the catfish in order to avoid any mishaps. In a suitably large tank, the possible choices could include giant gouramis, arowana and large cyprinids.
The advise is to invest in some large rounded rocks and big peices of bogwood. The Widehead Catfish does prefer dim lighting and it is worth noting that a soft, sandy substrate is best for optimal happiness. Don't forget to invest in a filter which is large and efficient due to the high production of waste.
In terms of diet, they can be fed tablets, pellets, live and frozen foods
Breeding is not common as it would be difficult due to the size of this species. In its natural habitat spawning takes place in the rainy season.
