Trichopsis vittata (Croaking Gourami)
Largest of the croaking gouramis and an excellent choice for the peaceful community tank. Quite hardy and easy to keep, and surprisingly loud!
Superficially similar to Trichopsis schalleri but there are usually two rather than three longitudinal bands. The red and blue markings are often less distinct as well, and the body tends to be a bit paler.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
Needs a quiet tank. Do not keep with larger or more aggressive species. Work well with dwarf barbs and characins. Provide plenty of plants and places to hide.
Builds a fragile bubblenest under a leaf close to the surface of the water. During courtship both sexes 'croak'. The male guards the eggs until they hatch. Once the fry are free swimming they need tiny live foods but are not otherwise difficult to raise.
