Neolamprologus brichardi (Fairy Cichlid)

This is a creamy-brown fish with distinctive blue and yellow markings around the eye. The fins are flecked with white and blue, with the male in particular having long extensions to the anal and dorsal fins.

Popular for many years, this hardy Tanganyikan cichlid is peaceful enough to work well in some community tanks. Although it is predatory and it will eat small fish such as livebearer fry, tetras, and danios, they can work well in large tanks with rainbowfish, sailfin mollies, and other species that like alkaline hard water conditions. They are superb in cichlid communities along with other fish from Lake Tanganyika.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

In the wild this fish rarely strays far from cover, and in aquaria it does best in a tank with plenty of rocks and shells. Pairs hold territories with great vigour, and will drive away other fish that get too close. A peculiarity of this species is that several generations of young may remain with the parents, the older siblings helping to guard the younger ones.

These fish lay their eggs inside caves, and both parents will clean and guard the spawn. Once the fry are free swimming they will eat a variety of foods including algae and aquarium detritus. Unsurprisingly, many aquarists don't realise their fish have spawned until they see the brood swimming about in front of the cave!
