Neolamprologus pulcher "daffodil" (Daffodil Brichardi, Neolamprologus sp. "daffodil")
Neolamprologus pulcher “Daffodil” is a regional variant of Neolamprologus pulcher collected from the area around the mouth of the Kalambo River, at the Tanzanian-Zambian border with lake Tanganyika. It is a relatively small cichlid (maximum size 6-7 cm) with a salmon-pink to pinkish brown body marked with yellow across the face and dorsal surface. The gills are further marked with a pair of dark curved bands, and pale blue squiggles cover the top half of the head. The dorsal, anal, pelvic, and caudal fins are edged with an off-white trim; all in all, a very delicately marked and attractive cichlids.
Females tend to be bigger than males, but are less strongly marked.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
One of the nicest things about this cichlid is that, like Neolamprologus brichardi, it is peaceful and does best kept in groups. Wild fish inhabit planted rather than rocky areas, so this is one Tanganyikan that really benefits from the use of real or plastic plants. At the very least, provide some floating plants such as Ceratopteris to produce the shade these fish appreciate.
Neolamprologus pulcher “Daffodil” feeds on zooplankton in the wild. In the aquarium they will accept a variety of foods, though small meaty items such as bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia are particularly welcomed.
Because these fish are peaceful and in fact rather timid, they should only be combined with other placid fish. Small Julidochromis and Cyprichromis work well, as do things like rainbowfish or platies when used as dither fish. Do not combine with anything aggressive, such as Tropheus.
Breeding is sometimes difficult. Spawning takes place inside caves, usually well out of view. A couple of hundred eggs are deposited inside the cave and guarded by both parents. Under some situations, subadult offspring from earlier broods will help the parents rear the fry, primarily by defending the territory.
