Trichogaster leeri (Pearl Gourami)
This fish has to be the most beautiful member of the Gourami family. The body is silver and is covered with brown flecks. At breeding time the male develops a striking red/orange under belly. The male has a long and slightly pointed dorsal fin whilst the females has shorter fins and she lacks the strong colours of the male. You will see from the attached photograph that a horizontal black line runs from the mouth almost to the base of the tail. These fish are in general very peaceful and make a useful addition to any community tank. In shop tanks they tend not to show their full colour and as a result are sometimes overlooked which is a shame because when established in a tank with the right conditions the fish look wonderful.
Pearl Gourami will adapt to most water conditions and are relatively hardy. They will accept most foods, including frozen blood worm, brineshrimp and flake. Live foods will also be readily accepted, although care should always be taken with live food in order to avoid introducing disease into the aquarium, live brine shrimp is fine in this respect.
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
This fish is a bubble nest breeder and will breed readily if the conditions are good. It is a good idea to split the pair initially and condition them well on a varied diet. Once the male looks to be in breeding condition with his vibrant colours showing and the female is starting to look rounded, place them into the breeding tank. The male will construct and maintain a bubble nest usually among floating plants and once they have mated he will guard the nest and eggs. Upon hatching the fry should be transferred to a rearing tank and after they have absorbed their yolk sac which normally takes two to three days they can then be fed on baby brine shrimp. The male can become aggressive once spawning has taken place and if you are able, it is a good idea to remove the female from the tank.
