Hemigrammus rhodostomus (Rummy Nose Tetra, Platinum Rummy Nose Tetra)
A delicate but impressive schooling tetra that works very well in large, planted tanks. These fish are whitish with a dramatic splash of red on the top part of the head. The tail fin is marked with a series of horizontal white and black bands. One of these black bands runs forward from the tail onto the the flanks of the fish.
This fish is often confused with a very similar species, the false rummy nose tetra. The key difference is that on the false rummy nose tetra, the black band on the tail that runs forward onto the flanks almost reaches a point level with the dorsal fin.
The males and females are very similar, though the females are probably more rounded
Fish information (behaviour and breeding):
A peaceful species with a reputation for being difficult to maintain. Must have very clean, soft and acidic water with minimal nitrate and phosphate levels. Frequent water changes are essential. These fish work very wll with discus, Apistogramma, and other fish with similar needs.
Breeds only in soft, acidic water. Parents scatter the eggs among plants. Eggs hatch after 3 days, and on the fourth day the fry will accept very small live foods, such as infusoria. Not an easy fish to breed.
Further fish details are shown below:
|Water Parameters||Prefers soft and slightly acidic water, but should adapt to most water conditions|
