Pseudotropheus crabro (Hornet Cichlid)

A fairly large, robustly-proportioned Malawian cichlid noted for its aggressive behaviour and attractive colours. Adults can switch their colours between essentially black and a vivid yellow-and-black hornet-like pattern that gives them their common name. It is believed that this colouration is used to instruct large catfish in the lake that these fish are "cleaners" and shouldn't be eaten.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

An unusual species that in the wild acts as a cleaner fish to the large catfish Bagrus meridionalis. The cichlid lives in the large caves where this catfish lurks, and the catfish tolerates the cichlids instead of viewing them as food.

In the aquarium this fish is hardy but aggressive, and only suitable for use in Malawi aquariums alongside equally robust species. Dominant males are prone to killing other males of their species, and they will also harass the females of their kind as well. Best kept in a big tank with a single male and several females.

In common with other members of its genus, this species is a maternal mouthbrooder.
