Candidia barbatus

A minnow-like fish that is pinkish-brown in colour, with yellowy fins and a dark longitudinal band running from behind the eye to the base of the tail. Males and females are similar, but in breeding condition the males have nuptial tubercles on the lower jaw.

Naturally inhabits cool, fast-flowing streams where the water is clear and oxygen-rich. Does best in a large aquarium with other subtropical fish that enjoy similar conditions, such as weather loaches and bitterling.

Fish information (behaviour and breeding):

A peaceful schooling fish. Feeds extensively on aerial insects that have fallen onto the surface of the water as well as zooplankton and other small animals. Readily accepts good quality flake as well as frozen foods. Little is known about its reproductive behaviour in captivity; wild fish are egg-scatterers.
